Straw is a by-product of world's agricultural activity. Some 117 million tons(1) are produced only just in the EU every year ((1) source : FAO). A part of it is used in the animal husbandry sector, the rest of it is composted or burned. At the same time compressed straw, this natural, breathable material has outstanding thermal insulating properties, Widespread straw bale making dates back to the 1890s in the USA. Since then, bales have been applied under unchanged form for homebuilding, mostly in self-builder projects. By transforming agricultural bales into modern building modules, ensuring reproductibility and quality control during the manufacturing process and providing an easy and quick usage is how GreenSulations' engineering meets the modern construction industrys demand. For those who are seeking for a technically reliable, 100% organic yet wallet friendly insulation solution, GS Straw Modules are a perfect choice.
GS Thermo
Frame filling element and surface covering underlayer
- Thickness from 5cm up to 25cm
- Transversely isotropic* fiber spatial arrangement for the highest available thermal insulation capacity [λ = 0,040 W/mK]**
- Open to water vapour diffusion providing a breathable insulation
- Optimized compacted density resulting in a perfect balance between mechanical strength, thermal insulation capacity and weight [ρ = 110 kg/m3]
- Patented innovative binding solution that allows the module to be cut and customized to any size and shape on site with the help of a hand tool
- Organic hemp string binding
GS Shield
Facade covering plasterable top layer
- Standard thickness of 5cm
- Transversely isotropic* fiber spatial arrangement for the highest available thermal insulation capacity and mechanical resistance
- Patented innovative binding solution that allows the module to be cut and customized to any size and shape on site
- Open to water vapour diffusion providing a breathable insulation
- Jute mesh stitched to the module structure to ensure a perfect adherance of the primer
- High pressure sprayed 3mm thick primer plaster layer made of natural, water vapour diffusion open sand and lime mixture
- Inserts that can be level plastered in one motion after the dowels have been installed
- Uniquely high compacted density [ρ = 200 - 220 kg/m3] which has many benefits:
- outstanding compressive and bending strength
- impenetrable for rodents, larger insects or birds
- excellent fire resistance (self-estinguishing combustion due to the lack of oxigen in the straw matrix)
- no creeping (long term deformations) possible under the weight of the plaster
GS Straw Insulation System
Modules are building blocks where different modules have different parameters.
Each module type has its own functionality and a well-defined role in the insulation system.
Their combined application results in a comprehensive technical solution, which enables the thermal insulation of houses and buildings with outstanding building physics parameters.
GS Straw Thermal Insulation System is composed of two layers: A GS Thermo underayer covered by a GS Shield toplayer.
GS Thermo + GS Shield = GS Straw Insulation System
Applications in External Thermal Insulation
Composite Sytems (ETICS)
1) Light weight wood (or steel) frame structure.
New construction.
Frame structure installation panel showing 60cm x 60cm demonstration modules.
2) Masonry
New construction or renovation.
Masonry installation panel showing 60cm x 60cm demonstration modules.
Please note that the modules of the two layers are installed offset from each other to prevent edge thermal bridges from forming where the modules meet.
The straw modules have an extremely low resistance to vapour diffusion (breathable insulation) and can therefore be used on any type of wall surface, be it brick, stone, concrete, wood or adobe masonry.
On surfaces where exceptionally high levels of moisture are likely to occur (for example, surfaces regularly exposed to heavy wind-driven rainfall), GS Shield modules can be preferably replaced with 5 cm thick reed panels:
Reed panels
Reed harvesting right and know-how in lake and river regions comes down from father to son.
Our company brings together a few reed producers, mainly family businesses, to promote ethical and sustainable reed farming.
Harvested reed is compressed and bound with galvanised iron wire. The panels have excellent thermal and sound insulation properties.
Another attractive feature is their resistance to moisture.
Reed insulation panels are available in 2cm and 5cm thickness.
Typical panel size is 1m x 2m.
Thermal conductivity : 0,055 W/mK.
